Welcome to Christ the Redeemer!

In November, 1980 approximately 35 Montgomery - area Christians desiring a more enthusiastic form of worship and wanting to establish an Episcopal congregation in east Montgomery, came to found what was called "The New Episcopal Church."  On January 7, 1981 the new church was named "Christ the Redeemer Episcopal Church," representing a joining of "Christ the King" and "Our Redeemer." The congregation first met at the Southeast YMCA.

On Palm Sunday, 1982, the church body moved into its newly constructed sanctuary and worship hall at 6801 Vaughn Road. Sunday school classrooms were added in 1984.  The Rev. Fred Pinkston served as the first rector from 1981-1985. During the second half of the 1980's and the first half of the 1990's, Christ the Redeemer was the fastest growing Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Alabama. During this time, from 1986-1994, the Rev. Mark Tusken served as the church's second rector.

On Palm Sunday, 1993, the congregation moved into its new sanctuary with expanded seating from 125 to 400. The former sanctuary became the Fellowship Hall. In 1985-1986 and again in 1994-1995, the Rev. Forrest Mobley of Lake Martin Marriage Retreat served as interim rector. The Rev. Vernon Jones, a retired Episcopal priest from Tuskegee, served as the head interim rector in 1994-1995. He and his wife are still vibrant members of CTR. In June 1995, the Rev. Coleman Tyler, became Christ the Redeemer's third rector, serving until May 1999 when he and his wife left to pursue a call as missionaries.

In August 2000 Christ the Redeemer called Rev. Douglas McCurry as their fourth rector.  Rev. Doug McCurry left CTR and the Episcopal church  on January 22, 2005.

The remnant left is actively rebuilding the church and taking Christ the Redeemer back to her roots.  We are excited about the future the Lord has for this parish and welcome you to visit.

On Thursday, August 18, 2005 we extended an offer to Rev. Deacon John Paul Thompson to become the Pastor at Christ The Redeemer.  Much to our delight he accepted the offer and started September 1, 2005. John Paul was ordained a priest on December 13, 2005.  On March 26, 2006 John Paul was installed as the rector at Christ the Redeemer.

On January 8, 2006 Christ the Redeemer celebrated their 25th anniversary as a parish.
